Systems in production, not prototypes

A national marketplace reaching feature phones, the largest bean research database in Africa, and the electronic trading platform behind a securities exchange — plus eleven other platforms behind them.

Three flagship engagements

PROJECT MANAGER

Webfarm — Digital Marketplace

Office of the Prime Minister (DRDIP Project, World Bank)

01

Challenge

Communities in DRDIP districts were producing goods and services with no reliable route to profitable markets. Any solution had to reach people on feature phones, on smartphones and on desktop — often with intermittent connectivity and low digital literacy.

Solution

Led delivery of Webfarm as a single marketplace exposed through three channels: a USSD service for feature phones, a mobile app and a web platform. The platform covers agricultural produce, livestock, extension services and input dealers, with listing, discovery and connection flows designed around low-literacy users.

Impact

  • Market access opened to communities across DRDIP districts
  • USSD channel removes the smartphone barrier entirely
  • Produce, livestock, extension and input dealers in one catalogue
  • Delivered under World Bank project governance

DATABASE MANAGER

PABRA Bean Research Database

Alliance of Bioversity & CIAT — Pan-Africa Bean Research Alliance

02

Challenge

Decades of bean research across 32 African countries sat in scattered spreadsheets, national files and individual scientists' laptops. There was no shared, queryable record of varieties, seed systems or impact assessment results, and no consistent way for field teams to submit new data.

Solution

Designed and implemented the PABRA database on Java and Oracle, then built the collection layer around it: an institution-wide ODK server for ODK submissions, tablet-based collection protocols, and training to research staff in all 32 member countries. Supported scientists in curating, analyzing and publishing results to CGSpace under open-access policy.

Impact

  • Over 1,000 bean varieties catalogued in one authoritative source
  • Research teams in 32 countries collecting to a shared standard
  • Informed policy on dry bean adoption in Ethiopia and Tanzania
  • Results published open-access on CGSpace and Harvard Dataverse

Automated Trading System & Investor Migration

Uganda Securities Exchange

03

Challenge

The exchange traded manually. Modernising meant standing up an electronic trading platform, migrating over 30,000 investor records off a legacy Oracle-based CDS system, and guaranteeing business continuity for a market that cannot afford downtime.

Solution

Developed the hosting architecture specification for the ATS, configured the primary site with consultants, and set up real-time backup at NITA-U. Migrated investor data to the MSSQL database powering the ATS, supported SWIFT integration for real-time bank settlement, built the IPO online application system and the biometric investor registration infrastructure.

Impact

  • Over 30,000 investor records migrated from Oracle CDS to MSSQL
  • Real-time disaster recovery site established at NITA
  • Electronic order matching replacing manual trading
  • SWIFT-backed real-time settlement between bank and ATS
